Speech made to supporters at the first City match under Trust control

Trust Board member Paul Rawnsley, who had led the formulation and completion of the Trust's Rescue Package, made the following announcement on behalf of the Trust on the pitch at Half Time for the first match for the new York City Football Club Limited (owned by the supporters)29 March 2003

On behalf of the Trust Board

In January 2002 about 400 City fans attended the public meeting that provided a mandate to form a Trust.

Just a few weeks later, around 1,000 City fans attended the Barbican launch of the York City Supporters Trust.

Membership numbers quickly grew to around 1,500.

In June last year, the Trusts Board was elected by the membership to lead the Trusts work to act in the best interests of York City Football Club.

Unfortunately, through the actions of the previous owners, over recent years our Club had been driven to the brink of extinction. Dont ever forget how close we came to losing our club.

Others have come and gone.
Many people said the club was beyond salvation.
However, it was all of us here today the supporters that stood strong and would not let them kill York City.

Along the way there have been many City fans who have worked tirelessly to save our club.

Their work, and the passion and support of all of you here today, has saved York City from extinction and has delivered the reality of a club run by the fans for the fans.

This is Your York City.

Over the past few months we have had to overcome numerous challenges from various parties to put in place the communitys rescue package.

That includes things like:
- Satisfying the Football League and the FA;
- Being able to present the League with a potential ground solution was an absolute necessity and, on the basis that were being kicked out of Bootham Crescent at the end of next season, the planning for a move to a properly developed alternative site is starting;
- Weve worked with the PFA and the players to get deferral agreements in place to help the finances;
- And weve worked with our own legal advisers (Cobbetts) and the Administrator in relation to the Sale Agreement and his (ultimately) successful CVA;
- Weve had to deal with a couple of former Chairman of the old club with regard to certain issues
- In addition, through your fantastic support, the 200,000 cash target was achieved to enable the deal to complete;

And, of course, theres been the creation of the Trusts new company and the appointment of a new Board to oversee the running of the new York City Football Club.

This is now the start of a new journey. There are many challenges ahead.

The new Club Board - of Mike, Jason, Ian, Sophie and the new Chairman Steve - need our support.

Working together, we will create a community club for the benefit of future generations.

Be proud to be York City.

And thank you to everyone for their continuing support.

Theyll Never Kill York City!
