Anniversary Dinner - 29th September
Anniversary Dinner - 29th September

Supporting City

York City has confirmed that ex-manager and Manchester United legend, Wilf McGuinness, will be the guest speaker at their dinner on 29th September to commemorate the Clubs' dramatic 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford 10 years ago.

Wilf McGuinness has strong associations with both clubs as he has played for and managed Manchester United and also had a brief spell as manager at York City, though this unfortunately led to the Club's relegation.

His playing career started when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United in 1955, making his first team debut at the age of 17. He was playing alongside legendary figures such as Duncan Edwards, though unlike his team mate, he thankfully escaped the ill fated trip to Belgrade due to injury.

After his career ended with injury at the age of 22, Wilf went on to develop his coaching skills and assisted Alf Ramsay, training the 1966 World Cup squad. He then went on to manage Manchester United and York City in the 1970s and now works for the Manchester United commercial department on match days.

Today, he is also a legendary figure on the after dinner speaking circuit and has been described by Sir Bobby Charlton as "The funniest after dinner speaker I have heard." With a vast array of anecdotes and stories from the world of football, he is sure to prove a really entertaining guest speaker.

York City commercial manager, Elliot Stroud said, "It's fantastic news that Wilf McGuinness will be our guest speaker at the commemorative dinner. He is incredibly funny and has strong connections with both York City and Manchester United, so he will appeal to everyone attending."

Stroud added, "I'm sure Wilf will get some grief and banter about his time as manager of York, but this will only add to the evening's entertainment."

The Club also confirmed, ITV commentator Guy Mowbray will be interviewing the players from the 95 side during the evening and commentating on the film footage from the game. Guy, who hails from York, was at Old Trafford on that great night 10 years ago providing radio commentary for those who couldn't get to the game.

Ex-City and Charlton Athletic goalkeeper, Dean Kiely has also been invited to the event and football commitments permitting, he will try to make the trip up to York for this special occasion.

Tickets for the dinner are still on sale and are priced 35 each. Tables or 10 or 12 are available. For further details contact Elliot Stroud on 0870 7771922 or email elliot.stroud@ycfc.net.
