Save City Ale hits the bar

City fans ready to drink for victory!

by CHRIS TITLEY, YORKSHIRE EVENING PRESS

Fans are being asked to "sup up for City" by drinking two beers specially brewed in aid of the threatened club.

The first comes all the way from Scotland. Minstermen Bitter (also known as Minstermen `R' Bitter) is the creation of David Murray, who runs Fisherrow Brewery in Edinburgh.

David is a supporter of Heart of Midlothian FC and started following City as well in the 1960s.

"They played in maroon and white, the same colour as Heart of Midlothian, the team I supported in Edinburgh - so I didn't need to change my scarf when I went to see them."

In the Seventies, the link between City and Hearts was strengthened by a number of player transfers between the two clubs.

When David learned of the threat to City, "to say I was shocked would be an understatement".

He decided to brew a special beer two weeks ago. "I thought this was the way to show allegiance to the cause," he said.

David has already delivered barrels of Minstermen Bitter to pubs in Sheffield, Liverpool and elsewhere in the North of England.

He has delivered supplies to York Brewery pubs the Three Legged Mare in High Petergate, and the Last Drop Inn, Colliergate. It should be on sale from early this week.

Ten pence from every pint sold will go to the Supporters' Trust fund.

York Brewery boss Tony Thomson is also brewing his own special beer, Save City Ale. It should be ready in about a week, and again 10p per pint will go to the fund.

Any pub landlords wanting to support the campaign can order Save City Ale from Carol at York Brewery on 01904 621162 from Monday.

Sophie McGill, spokeswoman of the Save City Working Party, said: "We're absolutely delighted that Fisherrow and York Brewery are showing our cause such support.

"We hope City fans will keep drinking these beers to help our campaign."
