Happy Wanderers DVD
Happy Wanderers DVD

Supporting City

From TOOAB: Phil Howdon (Sports Editor, York TV) writes . . .

It has been brought to my attention that there was a letter (in TOOAB) about the Happy Wanderers DVD, produced by myself for last Wednesday's dinner at York Racecourse. I believe the letter is from a James Piercy of Cheshire and reads:

"I may be asking a silly question, but can this DVD be made available for purchase by people like myself who were not at the dinner? If 300 people bought it at 10 (plus post and packing) then the shortfall in funding the reserve team would be resolved."

So here is my answer to the question.

At the moment the DVD has already brought in 620 worth of revenue with another estimated 300 pounds still to come in from internet purchasers and other people who could not, for one reason or another, attend the Happy Wanderers Dinner.

I have sold the DVD in 3 ways - 36 were sold on the night. Another 21 were paid for on the night and the DVD will be posted to those people during the next week or so. The other way is for people to e-mail me at with their name and address requesting a copy.

The deadline for these applications is Friday 8th April. Because I am paying for the cost of the production personally, and because I have so much other work to do, I cannot take any orders after that date to keep this project manageable. The project will then be deleted from our computer due to reasons of size and space.

My message to any City supporter who would like one is to contact me ASAP with your name and address. Once I know how many I will need to make I will post them out and then cash will be collected (either 10 in postal orders, or a cheque made payable to "York Minstermen").

I have covered the costs of the DVDs and the boxes personally, and with help from Daley Mayall from York City fanzine "GLF" who has very generously designed the covers, all the funds raised will go to York City FC and towards the campaign to keep the reserves. I originally envisaged that the project would reap around 300 but, as you can see, it is now more likely to raise around 1,000 which is far beyond my highest expectations.

The DVD includes the messages from Tommy Forgan, Hugh Kitchin and Arthur Bottom, as well as the Photographic Archive, and the Happy Wanderers music, as well as the footage of those great games which have been restored by myself and my technical assistants at York TV. Of course the stuff is 50 years old, and some of it was difficult to rescue, but I think the final product does it justice, as those of your contributors who went to the dinner may have seen first hand.

Finally, thank you for your interest and I hope I have answered the question, but thanks most of all go to the Happy Wanderers who are still helping the club 50 years on after their great achievements. What a truly amazing group of people they were and are.
