Happy Wanderers

From have been approached by the family of one of the club's greatest ever players, legendary right-winger of the fifties and sixties Billy Hughes, in an effort to find film footage of their famous relative in action.

Born in Glagow in March 1929, Billy Hughes made 380 appearances for York City in more than a decade at Bootham Crescent after being spotted whilst doing his National Service in the RAF at Rufforth. He signed professional terms for the club in May 1951.

Billy was a brilliant ball artist cast very much in the Stanley Matthews mode, a wonderful wizard of the dribble who was capable of opening up even the tightest of defences.

During his illustrious career he scored 58 goals for York and was famously an ever-present member of the glorious 'Happy Wanderers' side that took the football world by storm during the 1954-55 season - when York City became the first ever Third Division club to progress through to the FA Cup semi-finals, only being defeated by eventual winners Newcastle United after a replay at Roker Park.

Hughes was also an influential figure in the Fourth Division promotion season of 1958-59, making 42 appearances and scoring seven times.

His son David has contacted us in a desperate plea to find archived material of Billy, who sadly died last year.

"I am desperately looking for any old film footage from the 1954/55 cup run.

"My father, Billy Hughes played at that time.

"Does anyone have any film footage of any of the matches played during the famous cup run - or know how to get hold of it ?

"I would love to see him in action." will be making a number of enquiries in an attempt to assist David achieve his ambition.
