Looking back at that fantastic weekend

It was this time last year that the fantastic fundraising efforts of City fans - supported by football fans from around the globe - helped provide the funds to enable York City to survive for a few more weeks whilst the Trust's Rescue Package was finalised.

Not only were significant funds raised that weekend, but following on from that the Trust's bid was (eventually) accepted by the Administrators and those leading the Rescue Package embarked on 5-6 hard weeks of further negotiations and resolving issues.

One year on, for a moment, reflect back on what has been achieved.

Press release from 24.02.03...
The passion and commitment to ensure the survival of York City Football Club has once again been demonstrated over the past few days, as City fans and supporters of other clubs boosted the coffers of the Supporters Trust.

Trust spokesperson Steve Beck commented:

In the space of just four days, around 50,000 has been raised in the fight to save City from extinction. It has been an overwhelming response, not just from City fans, but from football supporters around the country and beyond.

Saturday 22nd February 2003 could have been the last match ever for York City Football Club. Trust officials are now confident that the imminent threat of extinction can be been lifted, providing time for the Trusts Offer to acquire the business and assets to be progressed by the Administrator. The Trusts Offer is the only offer to rescue the Club.

Discussions will be held with the Administrator to ascertain, amongst other matters, how the Club now moves forward over the next few weeks. Once that is established, the Trusts focus will move towards the funding of the actual rescue package itself. There are still various hurdles to overcome, and the work to save City is far from over. The money raised over the past few days can provide a vital lifeline to the Club.

The Trusts solution offers a massive benefit. Not only is there a substantial financial return to the creditors, but also to the players, staff and football creditors going forward. And, of course, the Trusts solution saves the Club for the supporters/community.

The emergency funds have come from a number of sources over the past few days, and the money is still being added up. It includes:

- Over 20,000 of donations via the
- Around 20,000 cash raised at Saturdays match against Bury;
- Collections on behalf of the Trust at other clubs over the weekend, including around 2,000 from each of Sunderland (v. Middlesbrough) and AFC Wimbledon.

The Trust wishes to thank all those supporters who both organised the events of the past few days and all those people who have demonstrated their support financially. The fight to save City goes on.
