York...and we're proud of it

(from the YEP)

YORK City fans attending Saturday's home game against Mansfield Town are being urged to turn Bootham Crescent into a sea of red by wearing their colours with pride.

York City Supporters' Trust have earmarked the Valentine's Day fixture as `Proud to be Red Day', to demonstrate their love for both City and the Bootham Crescent ground.

Trust spokesperson Robert Havercroft said: "This weekend's game gives everyone the opportunity to celebrate the saving of Bootham Crescent, our home of more than 70 years. We therefore encourage all York City supporters attending the game to wear their colours with pride".

York City moved from their former Fulfordgate home to Bootham Crescent in 1932. Bootham Crescent was partly built and paid for by supporters, and its saving will remain as a tribute to the hard work and dedication of all supporters.

Havercroft added: "To help create a carnival atmosphere for what is a very important game, it would be great to see everyone wearing the colours of the club. Even if you do not possess a replica shirt, scarf or hat, we just ask fans to wear something red!".

Ahead of the game, supporters will be able to celebrate the club's long-term stay at Bootham Crescent by marching to the ground. All Minstermen fans are urged to meet in Bootham Row at 2pm where the celebratory procession will begin.

Saturday is also `Ladies Day' at Bootham Crescent, an initiative devised by the club as part of the Nationwide Supporters of Tomorrow scheme to promote women's football and encourage more female support for the game.

All women attending the game will be given a special Valentine's gift.
