City's Club Badge
City's Club Badge

Comments from City fan who designed the Club's Badge

One of the first things the supporters wanted to change after they had Saved City was the Club Badge. The chequered-flag soccer club effort for which those in charge of the old club had wasted tens of thousands of pounds was detested by the majority of supporters.

To enable a new badge to be incorporated into City merchandise and new Club Shirts, things had to move quickly. In April this year, the new Club Board announced a BadgeSearch competition and over 150 badge designs were submitted. A group of 20 supporters whittled down the entries to the top three and then City fans had the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The clear favourite was a design by London-based City fan Mike Elgie. Of course, that is the badge that now proudly adorns your Club Shirts and other City merchandise.

Commenting about BadgeSearch, Mike says
It was a great idea to get the supporters involved with the new badge. The Clubs recent history shows how much York City means to so many people and Im proud, honoured and generally pretty chuffed to have had my design chosen.

Mike explains his thinking behind the design,
My design ideas, to quite a large degree, were inspired by peoples comments on the Arthur Newsletter and by speaking to friends. It seemed to me that York, as a city, is dominated by tradition and history. I also think the Clubs old badge, pre-chequered flag, was a bit of a design classic and still seemed very popular amongst a majority of fans. Another design feature from the past which seemed to have an enduring popularity was the Y-front.

With all this in mind, I took on board a suggestion Id read about using Yorks coat of arms, five lions on a George Cross, as a starting point. I then added elements of the old badge (city walls and lions) and took a bit of a liberty with the George Cross to incorporate the Y shape, reversing the colours as well. After that, it was just a matter of tweaking all the elements to get it to a point where I was happy.

Mike Elgie is attending the match against Doncaster Rovers as a guest of the Club. Thanks go to Mike and all other City fans somehow involved in contributing to BadgeSearch, that has provided us with a badge that City fans can be proud of.
