From the Boardroom (09/11/03)

Progress made on financial front, but appeal for more support

Extract from Match Programme - Sunday 9 November 2003

From the Boardroom by Terry Doyle

Good afternoon and welcome to all of our supporters for this Sunday afternoon FA Cup tie. In addition we also welcome the players, directors and supporters of Barnsley. Whilst we have played a number of pre-season friendlies against Barnsley in recent years, it is a long time since we last played them in a competitive game lets hope the wait was worth it.

It is now a year since the troubles at York City Football Club first started to surface. The October wages last year were paid late (they were paid on time this year!). By Christmas the club was in administration which lead to the fantastic actions by the Supporters Trust through which the club came out of administration.

It is worth now looking at what we have achieved and what we still have to achieve.

Most importantly as I said the club was saved. We then faced a summer of assembling a playing squad capable of at least holding its own in the division on what would undoubtedly be a very tight budget. To be sat at 11th in the division at the beginning of November, still well positioned to make a good challenge for at least the play-offs, is no mean feat in itself. We would all acknowledge it would be better if the team scored a few more goals. Against that however, we undoubtedly have a team that is now very difficult to beat, works very hard for each other and for the supporters and I am sure will only continue to get better.

On the financial side we have steered the club through the difficult first three months when we knew we would make a loss. That in its own right is an achievement. However the losses utilised most of the cash that had been raised by the Supporters Trust.

Looking ahead, what we all have to do is to continue to support the club through the turnstiles, through our commercial activities and equally as importantly by supporting the Trust in their fundraising activities.

The budgets put together for the current season and submitted to the Football League all assumed that our supporters would continue to support fundraising activities by the Trust. The club is by no means saved financially. What we have done is to stabilise the financial position and we need continued support, particularly this season to ensure there are no further financial problems.

What can we all do about this? The club are continuing to look at new commercial activities. Perhaps one of our most exciting is the launch of the York City credit card next week. I would urge every supporter who uses a credit card to seriously consider applying for one of these. The club are paid a commission on each card taken out and a small ongoing commission on continued spend. This could be a great way of raising funds for York City at no cost to anybody acquiring a card. We also have a number of other smaller ideas such as hire of the boardroom and Christmas tours for children, which Peter Salter will deal with in his commercial column.

In respect of the Trust, I know they are looking at other ways of fundraising. There is the dinner after the Swansea match when all the players will attend. Please support this as it will be a great opportunity for all of our supporters to mix with the whole first team squad.

Christmas is not that far away (six working weeks!). Please bear in mind the club shop when thinking of Christmas presents. Peter Salter has worked hard to improve the quality of merchandise in the shop. Please do have a look.

Finally lets all hope at 5pm tonight we are looking forward to the second round of the FA cup..
