Supporters Direct: the supporters' trust initiative

York City within the wider football community

The latest Supporters Direct magazine (October 2003) includes a number of news articles, including features about

- Exeter City Supporters Trust acquiring the majority shareholding in ECFC from former chairman Ivor Doble. The Trust had taken over day-to-day running of the club in May this year.

- the story at Chesterfield, where CCFS (the Trust), having taken control in April 2001, initially owned 100% of the new company following exit from Administration. However, following further financial troubles, the Trust had to relinquish the majority control of the boardroom at Saltergate. After its dogged fight to save the club, the Trust faced very challenging decisions.

- Establishment of a trust at Luton, following the involvement and bizarre actions - of new comers to the club. The Trust is fighting to protect their club.

- Cambridge Fans United (CFU) hosting of first 11 aside tournament raising over 2,000. (According to the article, apparently a York City fans team turned up with a few players short!)

- The Trust at Airdrie United that now has a 5% shareholding in the club and a supporters representative on the board of the club.

- The Killie Trust signed up 260 members on its launch night.

- Within the last couple of months, Ipswich Town 1st became the 100th Supporters Trust to be registered.

Almost 50 trusts now have a shareholding in their club, whilst 30 trusts have a supporter director sitting on the board of the club.

The Supporters Trusts hold a majority shareholding at the following clubs: Chesterfield, Lincoln, AFC Wimbledon, Enfield Town, Clydebank, Exeter and York City.

The Supporters Direct magazine also includes an article featuring an interview with the Chairman of Bees United and YCST representative and City Chairman Steve Beck. Extracts to be included on the Trust website later.
