Out With the Old

The departure of Douglas Craig from the Board of York City Football Club is another positive step as the Club moves towards a brighter future

Supporters' Trust spokesperson Sophie McGill welcomed the Club's announcement:
"The departure of Douglas Craig as a director is another break from the past. Going forward it will help the Club to improve its relationship with the supporters, the Council, local business and the community."

There has not yet been an announcement about the removal from the Club's board of Barry Swallow and Colin Webb. Messrs Craig, Swallow and Webb, together with John Quickfall, remain the majority shareholders (approximately 93%) and directors of Bootham Crescent Holdings plc, the company that appears to continue to own Bootham Crescent.

These are the men who, in January 2002, announced their plan to sell Bootham Crescent (possibly for as much as 4 million) and to 'run away' from York with the majority of the profit.

Bootham Crescent has been the home of York City since 1932. The supporters have invested in the site financially and emotionally for 70 years. The increase in value of the assets is largely due to the good fortune of location in a city with booming property prices. It was not due to the management of the Club over the past ten years - yet it is they who seek to profit at the expense of our club and the community.

Faced with Craig's confrontational posturing, the true supporters of York City have acted in a dignified and positive manner over the past six months. Some people may feel there should have been a greater furore surrounding the actions of Craig and his fellow directors. In many respects it is a shame that the former Chairman of the Club appeared to become so bitter about the people of York.

York City Supporters' Trust will continue to work towards a positive future for our Club on behalf of the true supporters and wider York community. There remains much hard work to do and it requires a positive attitude from the supporters and community.

Richard Snowball, Chairman of the Supporters' Trust, commented on the future prospects:
"The Supporters' Trust will continue to press with John Batchelor for supporter and community representatives on the board of York City. We want to help the Club move forward to a better future."
