Trust to be formally consulted on plans to demolish Bootham Crescent

The Planning Office of City of York Council have confirmed that York City Supporters Trust will be formally consulted on all aspects relating to the planning permission to build housing on the seventy year home of York City Football Club.

Speaking about the issue, Supporters Trust representative Richard Willis commented:

Bootham Crescent has been York Citys home for seventy years. The supporters and the community want to ensure that the Club continues to have a proper home in the city. The Supporters Trust will continue to work positively towards this end.

In the light of the communitys increasing concerns about Persimmons application to oust the Club from its historic home, representatives from Citys Trust have now registered their interest with the Council to be consulted on all aspects.

A planning application to build homes on Bootham Crescent was lodged with the Council within the last couple of months. Meanwhile, it is understood that the Club continues to work towards developing a superior stadium to Bootham Crescent. A superior stadium in terms of location, capacity and facilities - would provide the opportunity for a better future for the Club. However, at this stage, there is no confirmed site or funding for a new stadium.

The Supporters Trust has encouraged all parties involved in relation to the ground situation to be open and transparent to help avoid any misunderstanding or suspicion of inappropriate motives.

Last month, Persimmon refused to answer questions posed by the Supporters Trust regarding their planning application. A number of supporters have noted that the planning application contains several statements that appear unclear and/or misleading. Some people have already indicated to the Supporters Trust that they intend to submit comments to the City Planning Office on the matter.

Copies of Persimmons planning application (reference 02/02212/4) are available from the City Planning Office, 9 St Leonards Place, York. Anyone who wishes to comment can submit their comments to the same address.

The Supporters Trust as a body representing supporters and members of the community - is considering its own response and is expected to submit its comments to the Council in the near future. The Supporters Trust has already met Council officials to discuss the issue.

According to both Persimmon and Club officials, Persimmon is a sponsor of the Club and John Batchelors Racing Team.

Many supporters remain deeply concerned that the club could be ousted from Bootham Crescent without a new superior stadium being in place. This is a very significant issue for the supporters and the community of York.
