Trust Delays Selection of Fan and Community Representatives

The process to select the first two representatives of the supporters and the community to serve as directors of York City Football Club has been postponed

As reported last week, eight fans had been nominated by fellow Trust members to stand to be one of the two Supporters' Trust representatives to be appointed by the Club as directors. Those present at the Save City Working Party held on Saturday 23 March had been due to select the two representatives. However, after some discussion, it was decided to halt the process whilst certain matters are clarified with the Club's Board of Directors.

Under an agreement entered into in mid-February with new Chairman John Batchelor, the Supporters' Trust has been promised that two of its representatives will be appointed as directors of the Club. Through the Supporters' Trust, the fans and the community would be involved in the future running of the Club and the representatives would proactively help to deliver the "fresh approach" and "culture change" that has been much talked about.

The process to select the first two representatives of the supporters and the community to serve as directors of the Club had been initiated on 13 March, a couple of days before the Club announced that Batchelor had been appointed Chairman. The Working Party/Trust Board is now keen to clarify certain matters with the Club's Board of Directors before selecting their first representatives.

Trust spokesperson Sophie McGill explained:
"We (the Save City Working Party/Trust Board) have the best interests of the Club, the fans and the community at heart. There have been various announcements over the past week or so since John was appointed Chairman. Before we select the representatives to be on the Club's Board of Directors, we felt that certain matters should first be clarified with the Club's Board. We are looking to achieve this as soon as possible."

The process to select the first two representatives of the supporters and the community to serve as directors of the Club was described last week. For the avoidance of doubt, generally speaking it is up to the members/shareholders of a company to appoint people as directors. The first two Trust representatives to be directors of the Club are being selected from the thirty or so fans on the Save City Working Party. Largely, these are the fans who volunteered their time and commitment to the Save City Campaign at the beginning of January and since then have worked hard to help deliver the hugely successful launch of the Trust and the campaign to save the Club. At the same time, Trust representatives are keen to emphasise that credit is due to a broad spectrum of City fans who have united for the cause and helped create the positive backdrop such that a deal to save the Club has been secured.

Last week eight fans were nominated by fellow Trust members to stand to be one of the two Trust representatives to be directors of York City Football Club. Until the postponement, the Trust's own Board was set to vote on which two people to put forward for the York City Board of Directors. In order to select the first two representatives it has been neither necessary nor practical to organise an election for all voting Trust members in the space of the last few days. All fifteen of the initial Supporters' Trust Board members will effectively resign their positions in May 2002 when the Trust holds its first democratic elections and A.G.M. At that time, every eligible Supporters' Trust member will have both the opportunity to stand for election and the opportunity to vote for who they wish to see on the Trust Board.
